FISHING NEWS & SPECIAL DEALS

1st May 2008 -This year has been a little different.Firstly,my brother Ian and his family who are keen hunters and fisherman from Alaska spent 3 months in NZ with us and secondly,we have been directing considerable energy into our recent acquisition of Pukunui Station and purchase of well known Glenburn Station on the Wairarapa coast with John and Helen McFadzean. We will be adding FREE RANGE HUNTING SAFARIS for Red and Fallow deer and Wild Boar to complement our current Gamefishing Charters.Hunters will have exclusive access to nearly 19,000 acres of renowned hunting territory. This will be run in conjunction with masterguide,Adrian Moody's operation.Contact us through this website for details regarding this nationally recognized trophy Red Stag property.Game management hunts are also available at very competitive rates.Accomodation on the properties can be provided.
Gamefishing trips were all based out of Gisborne this year for logistical reasons. Our season was short but only two charter trips failed to catch either Marlin or Yellowfin Tuna.Highlights included the successful boating of a dead tail-wrapped BLUE MARLIN after a four hour stuggle to lift it off the bottom and a potential NZ Junior Yellowfin record of 61.95kg on 37kg line to my nephew,Brian Reid ,from Alaska. This same fish, alas, missed out on $10000 by 900gms in the Gisborne tournament. Also a charter with English clients of Montana Wines stepped onto the boat in Gisborne after arriving at Auckland Airport the previous night and tagged a nice Striped Marlin and Mako Shark in rough southerly conditions with no other vessels keen to venture out Needless to say we were back in port by lunchtime with the cameraman escorting the anglers feeling rather seedy.

11th April 2007

Well,we did do one more trip in search of tuna & marlin on the 3rd & 4th of April. On our arrival at the Ranfurly Banks we hooked and lost a striped marlin and 30 minutes later we landed a Yellowfin of 25.6kg to Wayne Bicknell of Napier. After overnighting at Hicks Bay we returned to the area just nor'west of the Banks to see more tuna and managed to land a 46.9kg yellowfin .The angler was my 79 year old Dad,Rex.Water temps were good at 20.7c in this small patch of nice water.

Atmospheric conditions were very unstable and we witnessed a tornado with a tight column stretching high into the sky.Luckily this didn't affect the fishing and we returned to Tolaga Bay that night with a couple of nice late season Yellowfin but no marlin. We arrived back in Gisborne before lunch the next day.

After the easter break Glistening Waters will be returning to Wellington before heading to Greymouth in search of Bluefin

15 March 2007

Contrary to most charter vessels we have had and are still having an outstanding season with YELLOWFIN TUNA.They were late to arrive with our first two y/fin of 51.90 & 45.25kg being caught in the last week of February near Tolaga Reef on the east coast of New Zealand.Several more were caught on our next charter with Tony Condon of Lake Paringa,Sth Westland catching one of 61.7kg near the Ranfurly Bank and Tim Rhodes of Gisborne catching one of 52.90kg near Tolaga

During the Gisborne Hunting & Fishing Tournament of the 10th & 11th of March we landed our best ever YELLOWFIN TUNA of 65.70kg and the largest caught out of Gisborne for some years, to Gisborne farmer Rob Faulkner. We arrived at the weigh station with 4 minutes to spare having travelled the last few miles at 29knots.Fast boats do come in handy for such occasions. On the previous day of the tournament we landed a triple strike of Y/Fin with the heaviest at 45.6kg going to John Osborne of Gisborne. This gave us first & third place with 2nd going to a Bigeye tuna of 63kg from the vessel Annabelle.Work commitments in the Wairarapa have prevented any further forays in search of these great gamefish since March 11th but we are hoping to do one more trip before the end of March as El Nino does seem to provide late seasons with larger fish. It truly is a wonderful priveledge to see big tuna crashing bait on the surface in this day and age when the tuna stocks in the Pacific are under immense pressure from long liners and purse seiners

1st September 2006
Highlight for the month of August would have to be my experience on the vessel Cerveza on the Bluefin Tuna grounds off the west coast of the South Island. We caught two fish( 1 tagged for angler Graham Mourie & one boated for AJ from Queensland - both a round 200kg)We probably would have caught more fish but for myself,Alister Reid, being attached to a fish estimated by deckie Nathan Murfin & skipper Larry Joh nston to be 400kg+
The battle began at 5am in the morning and continued on 37kg line and 23kg of drag pressure for 21hrs in which time I managed to get the wind-on leader onto the rod twice.Unfortunately,Nathan could not hold the fish on the leader and at 2am the following morning I asked the boys to remove me f rom the chair and hand the rod to angler Tony Hill from Whakatane.15 minutes later and with no sign of the two large Mako sharks which had been tailing us,the fish was once more brought within Nathan's grasp but after 2 wraps of the leader the 500lb swivel parted-broken at the stem.
Deckie Nathan is now back at Cairns for another Black Marlin season while I am seriously considering taking GLISTENING WATERS from Wellington to Greymouth for several weeks next winter .Anyone interested in some BLUEFIN action contact me through this website's contact details

24 April 2006

Well, the gamefishing season in the eastern B.O.P. and Gisborne has all but finished for Marlin an d Yellowfin Tuna. This year has been the poorest weatherwise and fishwise for us in the last 3 years.Traditionally,March has been very productive but the unsea sonal sou'westerly gales of mid-March pushed the warm water species out of our reach a lot earlier. We can only boast 3 yellowfin for the season although on e at 45.4kg remains the heaviest for the North Is east coast. Our most successful charter trip in mid-February tagged 3 Marlin

.

Fortunately, Gisborne has early winter potential for Swordfish,Bigeye and Bluefin Tuna. With the longline fleet catching reasonable numbers of these fish we are planning several trips targeting these species.

.

The ever increasing cost of diesel will put the charter fishing industry under further pressure and we will look to employ ou r large livewells and tuna tubes to good effect

.

Anglers wishing to charter the vessel during the peak season (Jan 15-March 15 ) should contact us befor e the end of September 2006

6 October 2005 This year we have revamped our website and to kick it off we are offering several specials.

1)Firstly our liveaboard 3-5 day rates have been trimmed to the bone as seen on the rates page. These longer charters offer the better chance of success. These rates should be seen in light of the hefty increase in diesel over the last year. Can you fish and live more cheaply on your own vessel? It would be difficult .These rates are valid for fishing trips booked and deposit paid prior to December 31st 2005.A 30% deposit is required.

2)Secondly any charter weighing a BLUE MARLIN OVER 300KG or TUNA( yellowfin or bigeye)OVER 70KG will have the charter rate for that day refunded IN FULL

.
Happy Fishing and goo d luck

01 April-TOURNAMENT NEWS.The Pak & Save Junior Tournament at Whakatane was the first indication for us that th e gamefish season was going to be much better than the pundits had predicted in December."Glistening Waters" arrived 4 days early for the annual Whakata ne One Base but with no juniors on board we had to sit out the great weather & fishing. If there are juniors wishing to fish this competition in 2006 please em ail us at info@nzfish.com.

Following on from our 5th placing in 2004, angler Robin Britt landed a 52.8kg Yellowfin in the One Base to give us 8th plac e overall & another top ten finish.

The Gisborne Tuna Tournament was also successful with a Striped Marlin on day 1 and a Bigeye Tuna on the last day.

Glistening Waters spent the entire week of the NATIONALS with a Wairarapa crew anchored in various locations in the eastern B.O.P.There were enough chancesto have a great week including a double hook-up of BLUE MARLIN.The Striped Marlin were very tentative and we ended the week with a very modest total-1 tagged Str ipey,1 Spearfish & 1 Y/fin tuna.,

The vessel is now berthed in Wellington and available for charter(maybe a Broadbill or Southern Bluefin Tuna).Anglers w ishing to charter the vessel for fishing tournaments in 2006 should contact us well in advance.

Our rate s are extremely competitive for multiple day charters-see the rates section on the website. Our success rate is good-ask some of the previous prize winners.
